In 1841, the village changed its name to Canal Winchester with the founding of its first post office. At the time, there were five other towns in the state with the name Winchester.

A famous local legend tells the story of how Canal Winchester got its post office on Halloween in 1841. Two local boys were playing a prank used their horses to drag the small postal building of Waterloo across the street to Winchester, which marked the ending of the town of Waterloo. Canal Winchester hosts a Labor Day Festival every year during the first weekend of September, as well as a Christmas In The Village festival famous for its food, choirs, and horse-drawn buggy rides.
